About Typing Speed Test

Speed Typer is a quick keyboard challenge that flashes each of the 26 letters of the alphabet in a random order. Press the correct key as fast as you can to advance to the next. When you clear all 26, your WPM (words per minute), accuracy percentage, and total elapsed time are displayed and your top 3 scores are saved locally.

Unlike full typing tests that require reading and copying sentences, this drill isolates pure key-finding speed — ideal as a 60-second warm-up before a coding or writing session, or as a quick benchmark you can compare with colleagues.

Words per minute is calculated using the standard 5-characters-per-word formula (26 letters ÷ 5 = 5.2 'words') divided by your time in minutes, so your score is directly comparable to conventional WPM benchmarks. Every missed keypress is tracked and reflected in your accuracy score.

Scores are saved in your browser's localStorage. They persist across sessions so you can track improvement over time, but they are not synced to a server or shared with anyone.

No installation or sign-up required. Works in any modern browser on desktop or laptop.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is WPM calculated?

Words per minute uses the standard 5-characters-per-word formula: (26 characters ÷ 5) = 5.2 'words', divided by your elapsed time in minutes. This makes the score directly comparable to conventional WPM benchmarks from full typing tests.

Are wrong keypresses counted?

Yes — every wrong keypress is tracked and reduces your accuracy percentage. Only the correct key advances you to the next letter, so mistakes are reflected both in your accuracy score and in the extra time you spend on each letter.

Where are scores saved?

Your top 3 scores are saved in your browser's localStorage. They persist across sessions on the same device without any account or sign-up, but they are not synced across different devices or browsers.

What is a good WPM score for this test?

Average touch typists score 40–60 WPM on this alphabet drill. Fast typists typically hit 70–90 WPM. Professional typists and experienced developers often clear 100 WPM. The letters are randomized each round, so score consistency matters more than any single peak result.

Why use this instead of a full sentence typing test?

This drill isolates pure key-finding speed without reading comprehension. It is useful as a 60-second warm-up before a coding session, as a benchmark for individual key reaction time, and for practicing less-common letters that rarely appear in full typing tests.

Can I use this on a mobile device?

The game is designed for physical keyboards. On touch-screen devices without a hardware keyboard, an on-screen keyboard will appear but the experience is optimized for desktop use.
